The difference in life between a successful person and a failure is how someone deals with adversity and obstacles. In “The Obstacle Is The Way“, Ryan Holiday calls this out and uses a number of historical references to illustrate examples where some of the greatest people to have ever lived not only overcame obstacles but used them almost to their advantage.
Freedom Of Speech Isn’t Free
One of my pet peeves is when people say they are going to “go off the chain” and then say the most mind-numbingly banal claptrap. They tell you that they “have no filter” and yet what they write lacks bite or substance. I see this all the time and I think it is one of the lamest marketing tactics going around.
Leveraging Your Success
Society tries to teach us humility. Nobody likes an arrogant jackass that gloats when they win. As a result, when we fail we’re taught to use that failure as a chance to learn something, to take away a positive from a negative.
But nobody is ever taught what to do with success.
Checking Your Ego At The Door
Sometimes it’s extraordinarily difficult to have perspective when it comes to your own actions. I noticed this recently with someone who I consider to be a friend that asked me for business advice. His problem had nothing to do with an actual issue, it had to do with his ego being bruised.
Losers Have Goals, Winners Have Systems
Last month I wrote a post about how I was re-evaluating the use of goals based on a book I was reading from Scott Adams. Adams said bluntly, “Goals are for losers, systems are for winners.” That resonated with me because his logic made sense. A goal is a wish, but a system is a process to break down the actions required to achieve that goal.
The Art Of Persuasion
This post isn’t going to be an opinion piece about recent political events, my personal opinions aren’t that valuable. With that said, I’m going to veer off a bit into the realm of the political and popular opinion to share some ideas that I think are important and can be applied to your business.
Creating Processes In Your Business
When I woke up this morning, I had this very clear idea about something I wanted to try to get working across my Casual Marketer business. The idea was pretty simple, start creating procedures for the tasks that we don’t currently do well.
When The Merry-Go-Round Stops
At work today, one of the women in the office brought in her little daughter who is three years old. I sat down in my chair with her sitting next to me and asked her about her day at Luna Park. She told me all about what she had for lunch, the funny things she saw and how this pretty young woman painted her face like a kitten.
Owning Your Results
Today was one of those days where everywhere I turned someone was making excuses for something they’d done that hadn’t worked out the way they’d expected. I seriously was half expecting by three o’clock for someone to tell me the dog had eaten their homework. I’m not sure if there was something in the air or the drinking water today, but nobody I ran across owned anything they’d done wrong.
Unlearning Bad Habits
If you’ve read these blog posts for any length of time, you know that I’m a massive Toronto Maple Leafs fan. For those of you who don’t know, the Leafs are a professional ice hockey team based in Toronto and are the largest, wealthiest and most well-followed team in the world.
